Driven by collaboration and rooted in representation, we work together to build a more inclusive future within ocean science.
The TIDE initiative underscores OceanX’s commitment to scientific excellence and is a strategic move to enhance the rigor and relevance of our science program. By fostering a program that invites individuals from all backgrounds, we aim to elevate the quality of our science program and set new standards for the field.
OceanX launched its first-ever Science Impact Challenge in Fall 2025. Applications have now closed, but you can still learn more about this program.
A wide variety of perspectives lead to better science. Different backgrounds and experiences contribute to a wider range of ideas and approaches to problem-solving.
The field of science has long lacked the participation of certain groups. Bringing new perspectives into the conversation corrects a historical imbalance and builds a fairer and more representative field.
Science should serve everyone. Incorporating a wide range of perspectives ensures research addresses the needs and concerns of all groups, not just those traditionally represented in the field.
Launched in 2020, TIDE focuses on increasing the representation of historically underrepresented groups in ocean science, exploration, conservation, and research. Its goal is to provide resources and pathways for individuals interested in ocean-related careers, including research, ship operations, and media production.
TIDE activities include visits by OceanX personnel to colleges and universities with strong programs that support students from underrepresented backgrounds, as well as in-person and virtual events. The program emphasizes bringing together people from different backgrounds to foster richer dialogue and fresh perspectives in ocean science. The initiative also offers opportunities for participation in lectures, special events, and other activities designed to connect and inspire future ocean professionals.
BIMS amplifies Black voices in marine science and inspires future generations through outreach, youth scholarships, and creative storytelling — including a documentary and book celebrating Black marine scientists. Their mission is to increase diversity and honor excellence within the field. OceanX supports BIMS through event participation and sharing opportunities via its network.
In April 2024, we toured The Spelman Innovation Lab with Director Jerry Volcy, PhD. This state-of-the-art space empowers students through hands-on learning, advanced technology, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Featuring a Makerspace, Entrepreneurship Hub, and Game Design Studio, the Lab fosters creativity, equity, and real-world innovation.
Founded in 2004 by Dr. Paul Barber, The Diversity Project is a two-month UCLA internship that promotes diversity in marine science and higher education. Participants conduct field and lab research in Mo’orea, earn scientific diving certification, and become eligible for the UC-HBCU Fellowship supporting graduate studies in California.
In 2024, OceanX visited St. John’s University, hosted by Vice President of Equity and Inclusion Rachel Pereira. The team met with leadership, faculty, and students to discuss OceanX’s Science Program and Diversity Initiative, explore collaboration to support BIPOC students, tour labs, and film a Hudson River water sampling demonstration.
