NEW YORK – [April 30, 2024]: Global ocean exploration nonprofit OceanX and United Kingdom ocean conservation charity Blue Marine Foundation have announced a memorandum of understanding with one another to establish their collaboration in furtherance of the Convex Seascape Survey, the world’s largest blue carbon study.

The Convex Seascape Survey, a five-year global research initiative, will investigate and quantify carbon storage in coastal seas around the world. The survey will provide new, reliable, open-source information about ocean carbon storage to inform decisions on ocean use. OceanX and Blue Marine will collaborate on blue carbon projects related to the Convex Seascape Survey, including opportunistic sampling during OceanX missions for carbon and eDNA analysis. They also will partner on ways to expand the reach of the Convex Seascape Survey by facilitating discussions with key partners within the survey’s priority regions.

“OceanX is dedicated to exploring the ocean and gathering new information that can help protect this valuable resource," said Vincent Pieribone, co-CEO and chief science officer of OceanX. "Understanding how the ocean contributes to carbon storage is of vital importance as humanity works to slow and reverse the effects of climate change. We’re honored to be able to contribute to this important survey, to help support the health of our ocean and the planet, in partnership with Blue Marine."

Blue Marine is a charity dedicated to restoring ocean health. “We have long admired the work of OceanX and the shared synergies in our missions,” said Gabriella Gilkes, Programme Manager of the Convex Seascape Survey. “Along with our partners, the University of Exeter and Convex Group, we have put together the world’s largest seabed blue carbon study - The Convex Seascape Survey. This study offers the perfect opportunity to collaborate with OceanX on answering one of the most critical, unsolved questions of our time; ‘how can the ocean seafloor mitigate climate change?’”

The understanding between OceanX and Blue Marine highlights their dedication to fostering positive change and innovation in ocean science, storytelling, and the development of a sustainable blue economy. Together, they seek to create a significant impact on the environment and society at large.
