The ocean’s strength is in its diversity.
The ocean's biodiversity regulates our climate, provides food for millions of people, and sustains life on Earth. When we identify, protect, and sustainably manage ecosystems' biodiversity, we not only fortify ocean health, but also preserve its countless benefits to humanity. We must document the ocean's diversity of species and understand their potential to safeguard the planet's future - and our own.
Our science program explores uncharted waters to collect baseline data that illuminates the intricacies of marine ecosystems and how they’re changing through human impact. We bring that science to life through education that expands global ocean literacy, informs decision-making, and opens pathways that nurture biodiversity and ensure its lasting health.
We partnered with local scientists to help develop a comprehensive understanding of the Seychelles deep-sea ecosystems and successfully mapped the Aldabra Atoll and Assumption Island at high resolution.
We worked closely with the team at the University of the Azores – Okeanos to research several deep-ocean seamounts that were known to be important biodiversity hotspots, but that lacked critical data needed to justify their protection.
