Build the Future of Ocean Learning in the Digital Age

In the digital age, immersive media has the power to transform education - turning science into experience, data into emotion, and audiences into participants.

The OceanX Education Impact Challenge is a global call for emerging immersive and digital media creators, storytellers, communicators and creative technologists to reimagine how people experience the ocean. 

Participants will develop bold concepts that transform ocean science, exploration, and discovery into immersive educational experiences. Experiences that help people see, feel, and understand the ocean in entirely new ways.

Selected concepts may evolve into prototype experiences for future OceanX Education convenings and public programs, including:

  • Immersive worlds and virtual environments

  • Projection-mapped installations

  • Interactive exhibits

  • Games and simulations

  • Participatory learning experiences

If it changes how people experience and emotionally connect with the ocean, we want to see it.

The goal is to build a pipeline for the future of ocean learning - where breakthrough concepts can evolve into deployable experiences with global educational impact.

  • All Finalists will receive mentorship from the OceanX network.

  • Winning teams will have the opportunity to further refine and develop their projects aboard the R/V OceanXplorer.

  • Winning teams’ concepts will have the opportunity to be shown on a global stage and/or world-class installation curated with OceanX.

We're looking for teams of 2 to 5 people, all 18 years and above, working at the intersection of creativity, technology, science, and learning. This Challenge is open to all levels of career stages.

01 Living Light: The Language of Bioluminescence

In the deep ocean, light is communication. Fish coordinate movement, signal, and survive using bioluminescent flashes, even forming synchronized schools in total darkness. Challenge: Design an experience where audiences interact through light, learning how communication, coordination, and survival emerge in darkness. Creative Potential: • Projection mapping • Responsive environments • Multiplayer interaction • Generative light systems

02 The Invisible Ocean: Microbial Worlds That Run the Planet

Beneath the surface, invisible microbial ecosystems drive ocean life, carbon cycling, and energy transfer, forming vast hidden networks throughout the water column. Challenge: Create an immersive experience that reveals the unseen systems powering life on Earth. Creative Potential: • Data visualization • Generative art • Interactive ecosystems • AI-driven simulations

03 Extreme Oceans: Life at the Edge

In the ocean's most extreme environments, life thrives where survival seems impossible, from hypersaline brine pools to oxygen-depleted depths. Challenge: Place audiences inside these alien worlds and explore what it means to adapt, endure, and survive. Creative Potential: • Atmospheric immersion • Spatial sound • Environmental world-building • Narrative exploration

04 Deep Sea Explorers: Finding Life in the Unknown

The deep ocean remains one of Earth's last unexplored frontiers, where new species are still being discovered through advances in exploration technology. Challenge: Design an experience that transforms users into explorers, uncovering new life and expanding human knowledge. Creative Potential: • Games and simulations • Interactive storytelling • Discovery mechanics • AI-assisted exploration

Challenge Process

The Education Impact Challenge Journey

Stage 1: Apply - Apply by 22 November 2026

Assemble a team of 2 to 5 people. Select a Track (see below). Submit a 1–2 minute video with your concept prototype potential.

Stage 2: Finalist - To be announced in January 2027

Refine the concept, experience design, prototype vision and development approach using OceanX resources and expert input through curated Challenge programming. Complete a template presentation provided by OceanX; the presentation will detail more information on the ocean literacy educational journey, scientific reference and creative technology applications.

Stage 3: Winner - To be announced in March 2027

Winning teams will have the opportunity to come aboard the R/V OceanXplorer while portside or in transit to further develop their projects to be developed into showcase-ready pieces for exhibition at the annual multi-day OceanX Summit aboard the R/V OceanXplorer.

Judging Criteria

What Makes a Strong Submission

All applicants’s concept statement and pitch video will be reviewed by OceanX Changemakers Community’s expert judges on a rubric for the criteria below.

The best applications will answer each of the questions below in their pitch video.

Scientific Integrity

How is your concept grounded in credible ocean science? What evidence, research, or expertise informs your team's project?

Audience

Who is this experience designed for? What should this audience learn or understand through the experience?

Originality

What assumptions are you challenging? How is your approach different from existing ways of engaging people in ocean topics?

Feasibility

What would it take to bring this idea to life? How could this concept realistically evolve into a prototype and a showcase ready project?

Emotional Impact

How will your experience spark curiosity, wonder, or empathy for the ocean? What do you hope people will think, feel, and do differently afterward?

Potential to Scale

Where else could this idea create impact? How could your concept be adapted for different audiences, learning environments, or OceanX initiatives?
