From March 25–27, OceanX Connect: Hong Kong brought together leaders from across the region aboard the OceanXplorer to focus on a shared goal: better understanding our ocean and inspiring the next generation to care for it.
At its heart, OceanX is about exploring and understanding the ocean—and sharing what we learn to help create sustainable solutions that protect it and support a better, bluer future. In Hong Kong, that mission came to life through a series of events that gave audiences a direct window into ocean exploration, the people behind it, and the conversations around understanding and protecting it.
The week began at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum with OceanX Live: Exploring the Ocean Then & Now, a standout event that offered a real-time look inside the OceanXplorer, one of the most advanced research vessels in the world.
Through the livestream, audiences heard directly from scientists, engineers, and storytellers, getting a behind-the-scenes look at how ocean exploration actually happens—from the technology onboard to the human stories driving discovery.
By connecting the history of ocean exploration with today’s latest breakthroughs, the event showed just how far we’ve come, and why exploring the ocean still matters now more than ever.
OceanX Connect: Hong Kong focused on three main experiences: a science roundtable, an education roundtable, and guided tours of the OceanXplorer.
Experts, educators, and students came together for open conversations about the future of ocean science and learning. At the same time, ship tours gave students and faculty a hands-on look at the tools and spaces where research happens.
These moments weren’t just about sharing knowledge; they were about building connections. Participants exchanged ideas, explored new ways to work together, and discussed how to make ocean science more accessible to more people.
The Science Roundtables revealed a clear consensus: advancing ocean science will depend on connecting fragmented data, disciplines, and decision-making to better understand and protect rapidly changing marine systems.
Conversations centered on connectivity, data gaps, and turning science into action—and a clear line was drawn, integration is no longer optional. Read below to learn more.
Connectivity is key
Ocean systems are deeply interconnected—from rivers to the deep sea—and must be studied as one system.
We need better data
There are major gaps in long-term, high-resolution, and biological data, especially in deep sea and ecosystem monitoring.
Pressures are growing
Climate change, pollution, and overfishing are accelerating impacts on marine ecosystems.
Science isn’t reaching policy
Stronger links between research and decision-making are needed to drive real-world action.
OceanX can help bridge the gap
By combining science, technology, and storytelling, OceanX can connect people, data, and ideas.
Bottom line: Progress depends on better integration—across science, policy, and public engagement.
The Education Roundtables surfaced a clear insight: ocean literacy will only scale when knowledge is transformed into experiences that are personal, emotional, and participatory.
The OceanX Education Roundtables explored how to better connect people to the ocean in a digital, fast-changing world. Here are the key takeaways:
Knowledge isn’t the issue, connection is
Ocean science is advancing, but it isn’t translating into public understanding or action.
Storytelling drives engagement
Data alone doesn’t resonate. Emotional, human-centered stories are what make people care.
Make it personal and local
People engage when ocean issues connect to their daily lives, culture, and communities.
Experiences matter more than information
Hands-on, immersive, and participatory learning creates lasting impact.
Technology is a powerful enabler
AI and immersive media can make ocean science more accessible, interactive, and scalable.
Participation fuels action
Moving from passive learning to active involvement, creation, contribution, and citizen science is key.
Bottom line: Ocean education must shift from delivering information to creating meaningful experiences that inspire understanding and action.
Put simply: when we connect the science with how people learn and share it openly, we give ocean knowledge the power to actually make a difference. The program showed how bringing people together, both in person and virtually, can:
Open the door to new discoveries
Build stronger partnerships across regions
Inspire people to learn more, care more, and take action
OceanX Connect: Hong Kong highlights something simple but powerful: when you combine science with storytelling and real human connection, it creates a much bigger impact.
By bringing people closer to ocean discovery, whether through a live broadcast from a ship or conversations with experts, OceanX is helping more people understand why the ocean matters.
As OceanX continues its work across Asia and beyond, programs like OceanX Connect show that protecting the ocean isn’t just about what we discover, it’s about how we share those discoveries and inspire others to be part of the journey.
