At OceanX, artificial intelligence is transforming how we understand and protect the ocean. Two key innovations, SeaSwipe and Digital Twins, are working together to create a new era of predictive modeling and data visualization.

SeaSwipe: Turning Ocean Data into Discovery

The ocean holds patterns that can help us predict the future of our planet - OceanX’s SeaSwipe is designed to uncover those patterns.

SeaSwipe is a cutting-edge annotation platform that identifies marine life captured in ROV footage, like corals and sponges, and translates those discoveries into precise measurements of ocean biodiversity. During OceanX missions, SeaSwipe’s data is powering  a breakthrough predictive model that can forecast where vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) may exist — even in places humanity has never seen or sampled.

By integrating multimodal data, SeaSwipe helps build a more complete picture of ocean habitats, revealing insights into why deep-sea corals, sponges, and other fragile life forms thrive in certain areas but not others. This knowledge lets scientists pinpoint priority conservation areas, identify areas for future scientific expeditions, and advance protection of biodiversity-rich regions critical to ocean health.

SeaSwipe offers researchers a powerful tool for efficiently reviewing ROV footage and streamlining data collection and analysis. The data collected forms the foundation for a Digital Twin, a precise, 3D digital replica of real-world marine ecosystems. This virtual ocean model allows researchers and policymakers to simulate environmental changes, test conservation strategies, and plan for a sustainable future.

Through innovations like SeaSwipe, OceanX continues to bridge science and technology, transforming exploration into knowledge, and knowledge into action.

Digital Twin: A Living, Learning Model

The Digital Twin concept will use SeaSwipe’s data to build an interactive 3D model of an ecosystem. This model won’t be just a static visualization; it will be dynamic and predictive. Leveraging this tool, scientists will be able to recreate a marine environment digitally and simulate how ecosystems behave, test hypotheses, and even predict conditions in other, similar regions.

First developed from data collected during the Digital Deep Mission in Cabo Verde, the Digital Twin concept will continuously learn from each expedition. The more data SeaSwipe feeds into it, the more precise and reliable its predictions become. Over time, it can evolve into a powerful analytical tool capable of offering predictive knowledge about specific regions that can help inform exploration, conservation practices, and research strategies.

The Future of Ocean Intelligence

By combining real-time observation with AI modeling, OceanX is bridging the gap between field research and digital science. Tools like SeaSwipe and the eventual Digital Twin won't just map the ocean; they will teach us how it changes and responds to different factors, and how we aid in building a sustainable future.
